Mycelium as a building material is a huge and relatively untapped opportunity owing to its fireproof and lightweight insulating properties as well as its circular lifecycle.
Beyond insulation, I was curious to understand if mycelium could be used structurally. As such, during my studies at TU Eindhoven, I designed a pavilion which employed novel glue-laminated mycelium panels and focused on understanding if it could work. Working with engineers, the hypothesis was validated with material testing which confirmed it would be possible to build a mycelium pavilion.
